It's not an incidental finding but a proven fact in many research studies after studying reactions of silver medalists, vs bronze medalists!
Ideally, a silver medalist should be happier than a bronze medalist.
But, the human mind doesn't work like mathematics.
This happens because of the phenomenon of counterfactual thinking.
A concept in psychology in which there is a human tendency to create possible alternatives to life events that have already happened, that would be contrary to what happened.
Silver medalist thinks, "Oh, I couldn't win the gold medal."
Bronze medalist thinks, "At least I got a medal.
A silver medal is won after losing the gold medal, but the Bronze medal is won after Winning.
This happens in our life also.

We don't appreciate what we have but feel sad about what we don't have.
Let's be grateful for our blessings, which far outweigh our problems if we start counting.

ReplyDeleteThis is hard & harsh fact that what you acquire as winner gives you immense pleasure. Bronze medal belongs to this category n is acquired with a huge gap with rest of aspirants. This fact led PV Sindhu to go for it when she was feeling dejected having been beaten for berth in Finals. Coach used this fact while pushing Sindhu to go for bronze. Results are there for all of us to see & rejoice.

ReplyDeleteDhan Nirankar. It is sad but in Sports only winning counts. It is the medal that judges your talent and hard work. No other criteria. No room for “Also Rans “ like the horse race.
ReplyDeleteHowever it is a fact of life.
