Body is a chariot & Mind is the driver

There is a beautiful parable - a deeply meaningful analogy in ancient Indian Hindu Scriptures -
The Atman - the Self is like a king who wants to roam around and explore his kingdom.
He sits on his chariot and asks the driver to take him to different parts of the empire.
He gives control of his chariot to the driver - to take the chariot wherever he wants to go and sits in the back to enjoy the ride.

In this analogy - the body is like a chariot on wheels - which is being pulled by multiple horses.
Gyan-Indriyas - the senses (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin) are the horses,
and Karm-Indriyaas - the organs of action - are the wheels of this chariot.

The mind is the driver of this chariot - which controls the horses (senses) with the ropes of thoughts, desires, beliefs, perceptions, and concepts.

The Self - the Atman sits in the back enjoying the ride - simply witnessing everything - the panorama and all sorts of incidents happening on the way.

The driver - the mind chooses the route it wants to take.
Horses (senses) move in the direction in which the mind points them to go by pulling the strings of its thoughts and desires.
Wherever the horses (senses) go, they pull the wheels - the Karm-Indriyas (organs of action) in the same direction.
Thus, the chariot drives along the different roads of the journey of life in the kingdom of this world.
Since the mind is in control of the chariot - of the horses and the wheels - it can take them in any direction it wants to.

However, when the mind is influenced and guided by the Gyana - the intellect - it controls them with the ropes of Gyan and wisdom and leads them to the right path.
In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says -
Beyond the senses is the mind - and beyond the mind is the intellect.
Meaning - the senses can be controlled by the mind and the mind can be controlled by the intellect.

In this way, through knowledge and wisdom - the mind - the driver, can take the silent rider - the king, the Atman - on the road of peace and tranquility - instead of on the turbulent path of duality - diversity, and plurality.

  2. Very good analogy. Controlling Indriyas from external objects and turning inward towards self inquiry, atma vichara.

  3. Thought provoking analogy. It's basically T(thoughts) E(emotions) A(actions) life approach all need to adhere and imbibe.
