'Buy one - get one free' may be a marketing gimmick. 

But it is true in real life as well.

We buy - (harbor) anger and get acidity for free.  

We buy jealousy and get free headaches. 

We buy stress and get free ulcers. 

We buy hatred and get blood pressure for free - and so on.

Conversely, if we buy trust, we get friendship free. 

If we buy exercise, we get health free. 

If we buy peace, we get prosperity free. 

If we buy fairness, we get free sleep. 

If we buy love, we get all other good virtues for free.

May God bless us with the wisdom to buy the right things for a healthy and purposeful life!

jo umar bhar 

baarish ki ek boond kay liye tarstaa raha 

Dhoop mein taptaa raha 

Aasmaan ki taraf taktaa raha 

iss ummeed mein - ki kabhi to vaqt badlega 

ik roz to aasmaan say paani barsegaa 

Achaanak ek din - 

kaheen door say

kuchh bhoolay bhatkay baadal 

aakar uskay sar pay mandraanay lagay

us kay man ko harshaanay lagay

khushi say naach uthaa vo pyaasa rait ka qatraa 

man mein aashaa kay kuchh deep jag-magaanay lagay

Aankhen chamak utheen - 

honth geet gungunaanay lagay

Usay laga - ki dard-o-gam ke din ab door huye

Thandak paayegi ab barson say jalti huyi chhaati

usay laga - ki zindgi mein ab bahaar aayegi

pyaasi zindagi jalan say raahat paayegi

mehak uthegi fizaa phoolon ki khushbu say har taraf

usay lagaa - ki  zindgi chaman ho jaayegi

सहरा में बिखरी रेत का एक कण

सहरा में बिखरी रेत का एक कण

जो उम्र भर
बारिश की एक बूँद के लिए तरसता रहा
धूप में तपता रहा
आसमां की तरफ़ तकता रहा
इस उम्मीद में - कि कभी तो वक़्त बदलेगा
इक रोज़ तो आसमां से पानी बरसेगा

अचानक एक दिन
कहीं दूर से कुछ भूले भटके बादल
आकर उसके सर पे मंडराने लगे
उसके मन को हरषाने लगे

ख़ुशी से नाच उठा वो प्यासा रेत का क़तरा
मन में आशा के कुछ दीप जगमगाने लगे
आँखें चमक उठीं -
होंठ गीत गुनगुनाने लगे

उसे लगा - कि दर्द ओ ग़म के दिन अब दूर हुए
ठंडक पाएगी अब बरसों से जलती हुई छाती
उसे लगा - कि ज़िंदगी में अब बहार आएगी
प्यासी ज़िंदगी जलन से राहत पाएगी
महक उठेगी फ़िज़ा फूलों की ख़ुश्बू से हर तरफ
उसे लगा - कि ज़िंदगी चमन हो जाएगी

मगर ये क्या हुआ ?
क्यों हुआ - कैसे हुआ ?
क्या ये उसकी किस्मत थी ?
या क़ुदरत का खेल था ?

कि बारिश बरसने के जब इमकान बनने लगे
नौबहार के कुछ यूं अरमान जगने लगे
आँखों में कुछ नए ख़्वाब सजने लगे

तो हवा के इक झोंके ने उड़ा कर उसे -
कहीं दूर -
धूप से तपते हुए
रेत के एक दूसरे टीले पे लाकर पटक दिया

जहाँ न बादल थे - न उम्मीदों के फूल
बस थी वहां सिरफ़ धूल ही धूल
जहाँ दूर दूर तक हर तरफ बिखरे हुए थे
धूप में जलती हुई रेत के क़तरे ही क़तरे

न आँखों में सपने - न ठंडक न राहत
न धड़कन दिलों में - न नग़मों की चाहत
सीना था जिन का पत्थर सा हो गया
उन्हीं सब के बीच कहीं वो भी खो गया

अरमान जो उठे थे -
वो दिल में ही रह गए
जो सपने सजाए थे आँखों ने -
सपने ही रह गए
अक़्ल की वादी में ज़हन भटकता रहा
आख़िर ऐसा क्यों हुआ -
ये सवाल बार बार खटकता रहा

क्या ये मेरी किस्मत थी ?
या महज़ इक हादसा ?
या थी मेरे पिछले गुनाहों की ये सज़ा ?
या ये उसका शुगल था -मालिक की थी रज़ा ?

सुना है आख़िर तो वही होता है
जो भी मुक़द्दर में लिखा होता है
हमारे सोचने या करने से क्या होता है ?

तो - जो लिखा था किस्मत में मेरी -
वो हो गया
ये समझा के दिल को आख़िर
थक के सो गया
और वो बेचारा रेत का अनजान सा ज़र्रा
रेत के सहरा में कहीं दब के खो गया

क़तरे - छोटे छोटे टुकड़े - या बूँदें
महज - केवल, सिर्फ

ज़र्रा - छोटा सा कण

किससे कतरा के चलूँ ? kis say katraa kay chaloon ?

चार दिन की ज़िन्दगी है  किससे कतरा के चलूँ ?
ख़ाक हूँ मैं, ख़ाक पर क्या, ख़ाक इतरा के चलूँ ?

Char din ki zindagi hai - kis say katraa kay chaloon ?

Khaaq hoon mai, khaaq par kya khaaq itraa kay chaloon ?

Everyone's life is different

Everyone's life is different.

Since everyone has diverse, distinct problems - the solutions would also be different.

The same solution may not work for everyone. 

Everyone does not get the same opportunities as some others do.

Moreover, everyone does not have the same resources - therefore, people have to work their problems according to their capabilities - in their own way. 

We tend to judge people based on what they have accomplished by comparing them with other successful people. 

However, we fail to see that they may not have the desired or required resources that others might have at their disposal.

The perfection of life is not in comparing with others but in testing oneself.

Therefore, while judging people, we must keep in mind their capabilities and the resources available to them. 

It's possible that, given the same resources and power, they might even do better than the people they are being compared with.

Some people have asked for the meaning - Translation of the Ghazal I posted a couple of days ago.

1.  Kabhi kisi ko mukammal jahaan nahin miltaa
    Kaheen zameen, kaheen aasmaan nahin miltaa

2. Tamaam shehar mein aisaa nahin khuloos na ho
   Jahaan ummeed ho is kee vahaan nahin miltaa

3. Kahaan chiraag jalaayen kahaan gulaab rakhen
   Chhaten to milti hain lekin makaan nahin miltaa

4. Ye kya azaab hai sab apnay aap mein gum hain
    Zubaan milee hai magar ham-Zubaan nahin miltaa

5. Chiraag jaltay hee beenaayi bujhnay lagtee hai
    Khud apnay ghar mein hi ghar ka nishaan nahin miltaa

Here is the translation as I understand it -

1. No one has a perfect life. No one wins the whole world.
    No one gets everything in life that one desires.
Everyone feels that either one thing or the other - something is missing in their life.

2. It's not that love and sincerity can not be seen anywhere in the city (or in the world).
    However, it's not found where it is expected.

3. Where to light a lamp - where to put roses?
     Roofs are there, but the houses seem to be missing.
     That is - there are houses but not homes.
     There are structures - but no spirit.

4. What a misery it is that everyone is lost in themselves.
     There are tongues, but hard to find that are willing to converse (kindly - affectionately)

5. As soon as the lamp is lit, the vision begins to fade -
    One can't find a mark - a place in one's own home.
    In other words, how unfortunate it is that one can not even live in peace in one's own home.

कहीं ज़मीन कहीं आसमाँ नहीं मिलता

तमाम शहर में ऐसा नहीं ख़ुलूस न हो
जहाँ उमीद हो इस की वहाँ नहीं मिलता

कहाँ चराग़ जलाएँ  - कहाँ गुलाब रखें
छतें तो मिलती हैं लेकिन मकाँ नहीं मिलता

ये क्या अज़ाब है सब अपने आप में गुम हैं
जुबां मिली है मगर हम-जुबां नहीं मिलता

चराग़ जलते ही बीनाई बुझने लगती है
ख़ुद अपने घर में ही घर का निशाँ नहीं मिलता

ख़ुलूस     =   सच्चाई , निष्कपटता , निश्छलता 

अज़ाब    = दुःख, पीड़ा, कष्ट 

बीनाई    =  देखने की शक्ति

Khuloos       =   Truth, Sincerity, Honesty

Azaab          =   Pain, Sorrow, pang, grief

Beenaayi   =   Ability to see 

Keep moving and learning

The flowing water does not become stagnant - it stays clean and fresh.
The moving parts of a machine do not get rusted.
Anything that stops moving starts to degenerate and decay.
An instrument or a gadget that has not been used for a long time - becomes useless.
A vehicle that has been stationed - not driven for years - would not start at first try.

The same applies to the human body and mind as well.
The body that tends to move keeps moving.
The body parts that are not being used much - begin to slow down and eventually stop functioning.
Similarly, the mind that tends to welcome and nurture new ideas - and continually keeps on exploring new domains - always stays sharp and active.

All things, including body, mind, and spirit, have one thing in common. If they are not used, they cease to operate.
Once they stop functioning, they begin to shrink and deteriorate.

Sometimes, we tend to think that we have accomplished everything we wanted to have - that we have learned everything we wanted to know. Therefore, we don't need to practice anything - or try to learn new things anymore.
However, regardless of age and how much we have already accomplished, we must keep exercising our body and mind. Constant practice and usage of the muscles, knowledge, and talents is the only way to preserve them.
Because if we don't, then we may quickly lose what we have.

To keep the body fit and in good shape, we need to stimulate and strengthen the muscles - they need to be trained against some resistance. The idea behind the nautilus gym machines and lifting weights is to provide resistance while exercising.
Just as muscles do not strengthen without resistance, mental abilities do not get sharpened without critical and evaluative thinking.
Similarly, the spirit does not rise without something to stir and attract it.

Therefore, we should never stop learning new things and ideas. 

If we do, we will only invite decline.
We should always look for new stimulants for the brain-mind and spirit to keep them active, expanding, and growing.
