Kaarvaan-e-Zindagi, Hasraton kay sivaa kuchh bhi nahin
Ye kiyaa nahin, vo huaa nahin - ye milaa nahin, vo rahaa nahin

The journey of life is nothing more than desires and aspirations…
(Always thinking) …. Didn't do this - That didn't happen - Didn't get this –  That didn't last long.

Ast udaut bhayaa uth chalay

Maaru Mehla: 5

Birkhay haith sab jant ikatthay
Ik Tattay, ik bolan mitthay
Ast udaut bhayaa uth chalay jyon jyon audh vihaaniya ||1||

Beneath the tree, all beings have gathered.
Some are hot-headed, and some speak very sweetly.
At the time of Sunset they rise up and depart; as their time  runs its course and expires. ||1||

Paap karendar sar par mutthay
Azraaeel phaday phad kuttay
Dojakh paaye Sirjan-haaray lekhaa mangay baaniya ||2||

Those who committed sins are sure to be ruined.
Azraeel, the Angel of Death, seizes and tortures them.
They are consigned to hell by the Creator Lord,
and like a landlord or a government official, asks for their account (to pay back) ||2||

Sang na koi bhaiyaa bebaa
Maal joban dhan chhod vanjesaa
Karam kareem na jaato kartaa til peeday jyon ghaaniya||3||

No brothers or sisters can go along to accompany.
Leaving behind all property, youth and wealth, they march off.
Those who do not know the kind and compassionate Lord;
shall be crushed like sesame seeds in the oil-press. ||3||

Khus khus laindaa vast praayi
Vaikhay sunay tere naal khudaayi
Duniya lab payaa khaat ander agali gall na jaaniaa||4||

You happily, cheerfully steal the possessions of others,
but the Lord God is with you, watching and listening.
Through worldly greed, you have fallen into the pit; and know nothing of the future. ||4||

Jamm jamm maray - maray phir jammay
Bahut sajaaye paya des lammay
jin keeta tisay na jaanayi andhaa taa dukh sahay praaniyaa||5||

One gets born and born again to die - and dies again only to be reincarnated again
- Suffers terrible punishment, on the way to the land beyond.
The blind (foolish, ignorant) does not know the One who created him;  and so, keeps on suffering ||5||

Khaalak thaanvahu bhullaa muthaa
Duniya khail buraa ruth tuthaa
Sidak saboori sant a mileyo vattai aapun bhaaniyaa||6||

Forgetting the Creator Lord, one is ruined.
The drama of the world is bad; it brings sadness and happiness.
One who does not meet the Saint - does not have faith, patience and contentment;
keeps on wandering just as he pleases. ||6||

Maulaa khail karay sabh aapay
Ik kaddhay ik lehar vyaapay
Jyon nachaaye tyo tyo nachchan sir sir kirat vihaaniyaa ||7||

The Lord Himself stages all this drama.
Some, he lifts up, and some he throws into the waves.
As He makes them dance, so do they dance.
Everyone lives their lives according to their past actions ||7||

Mehar kary taa khasam dhiyaai
Santaan sangat narak na paayi
Amrit naam daan Nanak kau gun geeta nit vakhaaniyaa||8|

When the Lord Master grants His Grace, then one can meditate on Him.
In the company of the Saints, one is not consigned to hell.
Please bless Nanak - with the gift of the 'Immortal Naam'; the Divine Name of the Lord -
that he continually sings the songs of Your Glories. ||8|

Growing Up or Growing Old?

This morning, I received some passages in my Gmail inbox – few excerpts from one of Osho’s lectures on “Returning to the Source” that I found very interesting and inspiring. Growing old is a universal issue and a concern of most, if not all. Here are some facts and inspiring thoughts about ‘Aging’ by Osho.

                            Growing Up or Growing Old?

Does aging mean growing up or growing old?
When we think of being young, we usually think of outer appearances: a beautiful face and a supple body.
But what if being young has nothing to do with biological age? Qualities like being just oneself, in the moment, spontaneous, exhilarated and excited, can belong to any age, as long as we stay vital, creative and interested in life. So how can we cultivate these qualities in ourselves?

“If you look within - can you feel the age, how old you are? If you close your eyes and look within, the emptiness within seems to be ageless, without age. Are you a child? Are you young? Are you old? The inner space seems to be non-temporal – it is! That's why you become old through others' eyes. You become old because of the mirror. If mirrors disappear and nobody talks about your age, and there is no calendar and no time measurement, you will remain young longer….
“If you are too concerned with the body, you become the body. If you go on looking in the mirror, you become the body. That's why women age faster than men – the mirror. And the miracle is, basically they live longer than men, but they age faster. On average, all over the world, they live four years longer than men. They lose their beauty and their youth quickly. The mirror kills them – continuously meditating on the body.

“Meditate on the inner being, not on the body. Find a mirror which reflects you, not the body. That mirror which reflects you is meditation. The more you meditate, the more ageless you become.”

With Thanks

Tootay Say Phir Juday Nahin

'Rahiman' dhaaga prem ka - mat todo chatkaaye
Tootay say phir juday nahin - juday gaanth pad jaaye
                                                           "Abdul Raheem"

Relationships (love) are very delicate and fragile - like a thread.
Do not break them by stretching too hard.
Once broken, they cannot be joined together
and if they do join - a knot will always remain between them.
Meaning, some distance and distrust will always be there in their hearts.

Expectation & Acceptance

Expectation is the mother of Frustration
Acceptance is the mother of Satisfaction
Anything from anyone - do not ever expect
Whatever you may get - be prepared to accept
This is the way of Sages and Saints
Be grateful for everything without complaints
Life will be surely happier this way
From the negativity, if we stay away
If we learn not to react, and be patient
Mind will stay in peace, happy & radiant
So, the acceptance – not expectation
Provides happiness and satisfaction

What is Heaven

Once upon a time, a young and an older monk met near a village in Punjab.
They were from the different orders – different schools of thought. After the formal greetings, the younger monk challenged the older monk for a debate – which was a quite common practice in those days, especially between different orders of monasteries. The older monk was not interested in debate but the younger monk insisted upon it.
“Enter into debate or accept your defeat without contest”- he said.
“But we need a judge. And there is no one around.” The older monk said.
The younger monk, who was very keen on showing off his knowledge, looked around and saw a farmer plowing his farm.
“We will ask him to be the judge.”
So, he went to that farmer and asked him to become the judge while the two of them have a debate on Scriptures.
The farmer hesitated. “I don’t know anything about the Scriptures. I am an illiterate farmer.
What do I know?” He said.
But the younger monk was too eager to start a debate and did not want to lose the opportunity to show off his knowledge.
To convince the farmer, he said “all you have to do is ask a question. We both will take turns to answer your question - And then you tell us whose answer you like. That’s all.”
The farmer thought for a moment and said:
“Well - I don’t know much. I have heard that if we do good deeds then we go to Swarg (Heaven). Tell me what exactly is Swarg or heaven?"
Out of courtesy, the older monk asked the younger one to answer first.
The younger monk immediately started reciting shlokas from Bhagavad Geeta - verses from Kathopanishad and Mantras from Vedas in Sanskrit. Clearly, he was very well-read and had memorized so many verses form the Scriptures.
With his mouth wide open and jaws dropped, the uneducated, ignorant farmer simply stared at his face – without understanding a single word he was saying. After about 20 minutes of reciting the Scriptures, the younger monk stopped - looked at the older monk and proudly said:
“Now! Your turn. Let’s see what you have to say - and how much do you know.”
The older monk calmly looked at the farmer and said:
“My dear farmer. Every day, you come to your farm early in the morning and work hard for hours – tilling, plowing and cultivating your farm in the scorching heat of summer. At noon, your wife brings lunch for you.
By then, the sun is shining right above your head and its heat is becoming unbearable, So, you sit down in the shade under a tree – and take out the rotis along with some Saag and achaar (pickles) wrapped in a rough cloth – take few sips of Lassi brought in a round clay pot to keep it cool.
With sweat rolling down your face and hands, when you enjoy eating those rotis and drinking that cold Lassi under the cooling shade of a tree – That my friend is Swarga - the joy of heaven.”
The framer’s eyes lit up – a smile ran through his entire face.
With great excitement, he looked at the older monk and said:
“You are the winner”

Judge your audience before delivering your discourse – Try to grasp their level of comprehension and
try to speak in their language - in a way that is easier for them to understand.
A person might become knowledgeable by learning lots of books and Scriptures,
but the wisdom comes from experience and understanding the life on day to day basis.
Learning should not be for the purpose of showing off.
Knowledge should make one humble – not arrogant.

Tension of the Opposites

Sometimes we ask:
"For years, we have been coming to Satsang, listening to beautiful inspirational discourses, and doing seva and other things but yet we have not achieved the peace of mind. We don't feel that bliss. Why is that?"

Perhaps it is because of the 'Tension of the Opposites'.
We hear and say one thing, but in reality, we do the opposite - and see the others also doing the opposite.
We constantly hear and even preach ourselves that Maya is Mithya – meaning money, world and its luxuries are simply illusion, false and useless.
And yet, we all want more money and worldly things and pleasures.
We preach:
"Kabeera garb na keejiye ooncha dekh aavaas"
"Do not be proud of your big and magnificent houses"
But at the same time, we take pride in building grand, marvelous and splendid Churches, Temples, Gurudwaras and religious places.
We say that God is Almighty, all powerful.
“Raakhaa ek hamaara swami” (Almighty God is our savior - protector)
and yet we think that we are the protectors of our Gods and want to guard them with maximum personal security.
We believe and preach that we should be content with what we have – that we should live a simple spiritual life by fulfilling just the needs and necessities of life -
“Saain etta deejiye - jaa me kutumb smaaye
Main bhi bhookha na rahoon aur saadh na bhookha jaye”
and yet – in reality - we want to have a luxurious life style – for ourselves and for the loved ones - including our gods,  idles or deities in the temples, churches and Gurudwaras etc.
This difference in speech and action causes imbalance and ‘tension of opposites’ in our sub-conscious mind.
Its like the tug of war – a contest in which two teams pull at opposite ends of a rope. The center of the rope gets too much tension from both the sides - it keeps on moving to one side or the other, until it eventually gets pulled towards one side, which is stronger.
Similarly, our mind also gets stuck between the two opposite characteristics of our speech and action. Therefore, we are unable to attain the peace of mind and do not feel that Bliss which we want.
The only way to attain that blissful state of mind is to be consistent with ‘speech and action’.
If we really believe that the Maya is Mithya, then it should not play any major role in our life.
But if we want to enjoy both the worlds – spiritual and materialistic, then we should at least accept the reality of both and should not speak or preach so strongly about the Maya being just an illusion and useless.
The inconsistency in our speech and action causes confusion – not only in our own mind, but in the minds of the listeners as well.
