Aatmano Mokshartham Jagat Hitaaye Cha
(Rigveda)
"Work for the liberation of the self and for the betterment of the world."
This profound verse from the Rigveda presents a balanced vision of human life.
It states that our existence has two essential and inseparable purposes:
First, to strive for self-realization or liberation (moksha), and
Second, to work for the welfare of others, for the betterment and upliftment of the world (jagat hitaya).
The Vedas and Upanishads inspire us to pursue both of these goals.
The ancient wisdom of the Vedas and Upanishads does not ask us to choose between these two paths—they inspire us to walk both simultaneously. Spiritual growth is not a retreat from the world, but a deeper engagement with it, rooted in awareness and compassion.
Moksha, or liberation, refers to inner freedom—freedom from the bondage of ego, selfishness, and fear.
It is the awakening from the illusion that we are isolated, limited beings.
True liberation is not simply an escape from suffering, but a state where one transcends narrow self-interest and lives in inner harmony.
As long as the mind is dominated by ego and selfishness - self-centered desires - as long as we live in the prisons of fear, we are not truly free. Nor are we capable of bringing meaningful good to others.
Only when we begin to dissolve these inner barriers can we experience true peace. And from that inner peace flows the power to serve the world selflessly and wisely.
Proclamation of the Vedas and Upanishads is to seek freedom - not only for oneself - but also to become a source of light and service for others.

The two purposes referred to in this verse are truly inseparable as you put it. By realizing one we are inevitably lead to the other. They are just two sides of the same coin.

“The Journey from Oneness to Humanness”
May all of us achieve this. 🙏🏼
Thank you
