Every day we meet a lot of people - at workplaces, schools, markets, social gatherings, religious places, and Satsangs, etc. Some people we meet are very humble, polite, gentle, kind, and generous - and some people are exactly the opposite - quite arrogant and self-centered.
Some times we meet people who continually keep on repeating God's name all day long - teaching religion and spirituality, and yet they are so arrogant and self-centered - always showing off their knowledge and talking about how much good they do for others. They continually demand respect and try to dominate and control everyone within their circle.
On the other hand - we must have seen many who do not even believe in the existence of God, and yet they are very polite and humble - always trying to help everyone without showing off - without any publicity.
Perhaps it has something to do with their past Karmas - DNA and Sanskaras; their surroundings and upbringing.
Perhaps, being arrogant or humble is a personal nature as well as a personal choice.
However, with determination, persistence, and regular practice, one can change his or her nature - if they sincerely wish to do so.
Spirituality is not about controlling crowds - or others.
It is about self- control, and rising above the present state of mind.
Because, in the end, we are only responsible for our own growth and progress - not others.

At times in your life, you come across situation specially at work place, when you need to be assertive. Even management gurus also say being assertive is an important function for a leader else he will not be able to control subordinates..yet at back of his mind he can be humble as he is working for an objective..
ReplyDeleteAgree that it is personal choice and can be developed
Thank you, Ashok ji.
DeleteThe way I see it, there is a difference in being assertive and arrogant.
A person can be assertive- to get things done and yet be polite.
When a boss is assertive but polite in his approach, his subordinates happily try to work accordingly.
However, even though arrogance may also get the work done, but it creates a negative feeling and pushes people away. No one truly feels genuine respect in their heart for the arrogant people.
Yes, arrogance indeed is a negative aspect and that's why I concluded to be humble at the core of mind... thanks Rajan jee for all observations

Thank You Rajan ji. Agree with you wholeheartedly. One can rule either by winning the hearts of their subjects or by a heavy stick. Stick always brings revolt sooner or later.
