What is Surrender

Change is the play of the universe.
Change is like a river, constantly flowing and moving things around along with it.
When we become aware of the fact that everything around us is constantly changing, -

and that we don't have much control over it, then accepting the change becomes easier.
Accepting the change – accepting whatever is happening is called Samarpan or surrender.
"Hukam rajaayi chalnaa Nanak likheyaa naal" (Japuji Sahib)

Accepting and moving along with the 'order' is the way to live a peaceful, blissful life.

                                   What is Hukam?

In English, the word 'Hukam' is translated as 'Order' -
which, according to the dictionary, has two different meanings.
One - an authoritative command, direction, or instruction -
To tell someone to do something in an authoritative way -
or going to a restaurant and placing an 'order' for the food we want.
The second meaning is:-
The arrangement or disposition of people or things according to a particular sequence or pattern:
such as "I filed the cards in alphabetical order".
Before starting a project, we want to make sure that everything is in a perfect systematic 'order'.
Interestingly, Hukam - in Hindi or Punjabi is also used in the same manner - with the same two meanings -
as a command - and the arrangement or disposition of everything in a proper sequence or pattern.
From their keen observation, since the beginning of the history, humans have learned that the universe runs in a perfect order. Quite often, we hear a popular phrase in Hindi or Punjabi - "Sab hukam mein hai"
meaning* everything is in perfect order.
But we also know that sometimes there are discrepancies or disruptions in nature’s order - such as earthquakes, floods, tsunamis etc. And whenever something out of the order like this happens, the life on earth is also disrupted.
However, we know now that this 'disorder' of nature is also, in fact, a part of nature's 'order'.
When we really understand the fact that there are many things that are beyond our control, it becomes easier to accept the 'order' and 'disorder' of nature or universe - and to move on with our lives without blaming someone or something.
Acceptance of everything that happens, is the meaning of Surrender -
Surrendering what we want and accepting 'what is'.

                                     "Rajan Sachdeva"

* Some people define this phrase by translating Hukam as a command, like -
"everything is under the command of ....."
