How to Avoid Negativity

A new study in psychology says that the human brain needs 40 days of repetition for a new habit to form.
In the old Indian Spiritual and classical music traditions, it was called a Chillaa, from chaalis meaning forty.
If we keep repeating something continually for 40 days, it gets imprinted in our memory and becomes a habit.
If we can avoid the bad feelings for 40 days, and replace them with some new ones, then we can choose our course, instead of letting them change our track.
But we should choose our new habits wisely.
Because, after 40 days of practice, when it becomes a part of our daily life, we will need another forty days to unlearn it if we don't like it.

  1. Very interesting...even in our Indian philosophy, scripture readings, fasts and other self development rituals take 40 days.

The Saints and Rishis were truly scientists.

  2. 40 is also an important number in the Jewish tradition. It is represented by the Hebrew letter ‘mem” which has the m sound. It stands for maturity. It is said that persons should not study Kabbalah before age 40 because it needs maturity to understand it. The Israelites wandered 40 years in the desert so they could learn deeply the ways of the Torah. The original generation that left Egypt was unable to make new habits and needed to die. But the young generation used those 40 years to become strong in Torah observance and thus was ready to enter the promised land.
