Kathopanishad - Story of Nachiketa Part 15

As his second boon, instead of asking for a guaranteed place in Heaven, Nachiketa wanted to know - what knowledge should be known and what Karmas should be performed in order to enter Heaven.
Dharam Raj must have been delighted to find such a great and keen student. He says to Nachiketa:

                     प्र ते ब्रवीमि तदु मे निबोध स्वर्ग्यमग्निम् नचिकेतः प्रजानन
                    अनंतलोकाप्तिमथो प्रतिष्ठाम विद्धि त्वमेतं निहितं गुहायाम

"Pra Te Braveemi Tadu May Nibodh
                   Swargyam-agnim Nachiketah Prajaanan
                   Anantlokaaptim atho Pratishthaam
                   Viddhi Tvametam Nihitam Guhaayaam"
                                                  (1 - 14 Kathopanishad)

"I will explain it to you well (in detail), Nachiketa, pay attention to me. Learn from me carefully, and know about the Agni - the Gyan (knowledge) which leads to Swarga.
Know it well to attain the Eternal Heaven and to remain in that realm - which is seated/hidden in the cave".

Many scholars translate the word ‘Agni’ literally and talk about some special kind of ancient ritual - sacrificial ‘fire’ used to perform Yagnas in the Vedic period. Translating it literally as sacrificial fire makes it related to some particular religion, and might create doubts and disagreements in the minds of the followers of the other religions or atheists.
Numerous times the word Agni has been used as a symbol for Gyana or knowledge in Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, and other Scriptures as well.
Not rituals, but appropriate Gyana or knowledge is what leads to a happy and peaceful life in the outer and inner - physical and psychological worlds. Not rituals, but appropriate Gyana or knowledge is what leads to a happy and peaceful life in the outer and inner - physical and psychological worlds. And it is seated/hidden in the Guha - the cave.
Just as a cave, hidden in the mountains or deep in the earth is not visible from outside, similarly this secret Gyan and the blissful state may not be visible from outside. It is seated deep in the cavity of the heart or mind, the Chita, the sub-conscious - it is beyond the dominions of the Conscious mind.
It is not for a show-off.
The Shruti says: The one who says I know- knows not.
Unfortunately, nowadays, Spirituality has become a fashion, a social event - an entertainment or a thing to show off.
Dharam Raj says it is seated in the hidden cave of the Sub-conscious mind. It has to go beyond the grips of the conscious mind. Until and unless this 'Fire' - the Gyana finds its way into the Chita- the Subconscious mind and stays seated in the Subconscious, it may not provide tranquility, the Bliss. To achieve such a state, one must practice and strive to remember the Gyana and repeat it often. (which Nachiketa did in the next verse – repeating the instructions he received, back to the Guru)
There might be another reason for many students and disciples to not being able to achieve that state.
Dharam Raj, the greatest teacher of the time, says to his worthy student: “Pay attention to me O’ Nachiketa. Listen carefully and know well this Fire - the Gyan, from me - from my mouth.”

In the olden days, the learning was directly between Teacher and student - Guru and disciple - especially spiritual knowledge. Disciples learned directly from the Guru’s mouth and cleared their doubts directly from the teacher/ the Guru – not from other sources. Unfortunately, now everything is learned indirectly from other sources such as fellow senior students or monitors or the internet or Google- not directly from the Guru. And that makes a big difference.
When I was in high school, our teachers randomly used to pick some students and asked them to repeat what the teacher had just said. We were supposed to memorize the lesson and repeat it the next day.
When we went from high school to college, we learned that college teachers were not known as teachers. They were lecturers. True to the literal meaning of the word, they just delivered the lectures. It was up to the students whether to pay attention or not- to understand and grasp the lesson or not - the Teachers were not responsible.

Unfortunately, the same is happening today with the Spiritual schools also. They have also become institutionalized – established organizations with hierarchies of their own. They deliver prestigious spiritual knowledge in the form of lectures to masses – in groups of hundreds and thousands. Often through their representatives. It’s totally up to the listeners and disciples to understand and grasp the Gyana and other instructions on their own. Some disciples might be able to apprehend it well and follow, while others may not.

Here, Dharam Raj is instructing the disciple directly and firmly: “Listen to me. Pay attention to me. You must know it well and absorb it deep in the cave of your heart – the subconscious mind”.

Being face to face with his teacher – sitting alone at the feet of the Guru, and being instructed directly and so strongly by the Guru, Nachiketa, the disciple has no other choice than thoroughly paying full attention to his words–to his instructions…and then repeating it back to him.

How to Avoid Negativity

A new study in psychology says that the human brain needs 40 days of repetition for a new habit to form.
In the old Indian Spiritual and classical music traditions, it was called a Chillaa, from chaalis meaning forty.
If we keep repeating something continually for 40 days, it gets imprinted in our memory and becomes a habit.
If we can avoid the bad feelings for 40 days, and replace them with some new ones, then we can choose our course, instead of letting them change our track.
But we should choose our new habits wisely.
Because, after 40 days of practice, when it becomes a part of our daily life, we will need another forty days to unlearn it if we don't like it.

Shams Tabrez

I have been a misfit since childhood.
I knew that no one understood me, not even my father.
He once said, "You are not a madman, fit to be put in a madhouse, nor you are a monk to be placed in a monastery.
I don't know what you are!"
I replied: Father, I can tell you what it is.
Once a duck egg was put under a hen to be hatched. When the egg hatched, the duckling walked along with the mother hen until they came to a pond. The duckling took a dip in the water. But the hen stayed on the bank and clucked.
Now, my dear father, after having tried the sea, I find it my home.
If you choose to stay on the shore, is it my fault?

To be Happy

To be Happy
You must Let go what's gone
Be grateful for what you have
and look forward to what is coming next.

Hoping to Revive Hope -

Never Say

Never say that
'it will never happen to me
Life has a funny way of proving us wrong
Always be prepared for surprises
Remember your limitations
Remember to be Thankful
Remember the Almighty

Life is Unpredictable

Life is Unpredictable
You never know what is coming next
Don't ever get too comfortable
Never take anything or anyone for granted.
Time has a strange way of creating situations and events
-some good ones, and sometimes tragic or even cruel ones.
Anything can happen at any moment
Therefore, always be ready for unexpected situations and events.
Remember:
There are so many things that are still beyond our control.
So, Always be ready for change.

Upanishads, the Real Philosophy of Sanatan-Dharma (Hinduism)

Upanishads, the real philosophy of Sanatan-Dharma
                          (Commonly known as Hinduism)

The Upanishads, known as the Vedanta - the ending or the final, conclusive parts of the Vedas - contain the real essence of Hinduism's spiritual doctrine. They have guided and inspired the greatest minds of India for centuries.
Bhagavad Geeta - the Celestial Song - is considered the essence of all the Vedas and Upanishads.

Lately, western thinkers have also discovered the hidden treasures in the Upanishads and Bhagavad Geeta, and are fascinated by the depth of knowledge provided in these scriptures. The basic principles of the universe explained in the Upanishads thousands of years ago, are the same that are recently discovered by modern science - namely quantum physics and the theory of relativity.

However, the masses - westerns and Indians, Non-Hindus, and even most Hindus derive the understanding of Hinduism - not from the Upanishads but some fanciful books or great epics such as Puranas, Ramayan, and Mahabharat, etc. Although these epics are full of great messages of morality and ethics, they are not the essence of real Hinduism.

Ordinarily, most Hindus follow the traditional ritualistic way of worshipping that they have seen their parents and others doing for decades. Unfortunately, Non-Hindus - without going into depth - tend to consider that to be the real, authentic Hinduism and miss the real essence of it.

The Upanishads' approach in explaining the underlying reality of the universe and its creation - nature, and life, etc. - is very systematic and scientific, along with the reasoning.
Before the existence of any so-called monotheistic religions, it was the Vedas who proclaimed:
                    Ekah Brahm, Dviteeya Naastay
There is only One underlying Reality - Absolute Truth - known as Brahm or God - and there is no other (Truth or God).
However, the Rishis, the authors of the Upanishads were very wise, and broadminded as well - with a realistic approach. They understood the human mind - they knew how people tend to think, so they added another phrase:
Ekam Satya - Bahudhaa Vadanti Viprah
Although there is only one Reality - one God - but the wise teachers may describe it in many different ways.

Technically, Hinduism is not a religion. It is a geographical identity of the people of Sindhu Valley. The real name of the so-called Hindu Dharma is Sanatan Dharma. The outsiders or the foreigners called it Hinduism - the religion of the people of Sindhu valley.

The word Sanatan-Dharma means Eternal-Dharma - That which was - is and will always remain - designating it as the Dharma (religion) of One Almighty, Alpervading, Self-Proclaimed God.

Why the big castles had small doors

Why the big castles had small doors?

Emperors wanted everyone to bow down before they enter the castles
- to show their obedience and loyalty to them!

Why the old temples - even the big ones - had small entrance doors to enter?
Because they also wanted everyone to bow down their heads when they enter the temple
- and leave their ego out.

But there is a big difference in both the above scenarios.
Obedience and loyalty toward the rulers or leaders can be shown (or faked) by performing certain rituals or actions.
However, leaving the ego outside is an individual and personal mental action.
We must go deep inside our minds and review why do we bow down when we meet certain people or enter some revered places?
Do we bow down only to show our obedience and loyalty to them? Or just as a ritual?
Or do we sincerely leave out our ego behind?
Others may not be able to see the difference - only we can judge ourselves.

कभी राहे-मोहब्बत में Kabhi Raahe-mohabbat me

कभी राहे - मोहब्बत में कुछ ऐसे  मोड़ आते हैं
कि जिनको दिल में रखते हैं वही दिल तोड़ जाते हैं

Kabhi Raahe-mohabbat me kuchh aisay mod aatay hain

Ki jin ko dil me rakhtay hain, vahi dil tod jaatay hain

Humans are Emotional

We, humans, are emotional beings by nature.
Most of the time, we are controlled by our emotions.
Emotions need energy from our consciousness to sustain.
However, the energy which is not controlled and regulated by the consciousness confuses and upsets the mind.
We become unhappy and disturbed.
The ancient Hindu scriptures provide a scientific, psychological solution to solve this problem.
It is called 'Saakshi-Bhaav' - The witness or the detached observation - meaning watching our emotions objectively, as an observer or bystander. If we observe our anger, it dies. When we witness emotions, they vanish.
But if we don't detach from them, they become our master - we become their slaves and suffer.
So the solution is to detach from the inner storms - to stand back and observe them pass.
It is not about killing the mind and becoming emotionless.
It's about becoming - not a slave but the master of our mind.
Those who have mastery over their minds are the real victorious.

Healthy, Genuine discussions are good

Humans have a natural tendency to give advice - to share their knowledge with others.
Most animals and birds also do it instinctively. However, because of the limitations, they cannot share anything else other than teaching their offsprings how to meet the basic needs for survival.
On the other hand, humans have the faculty of language, which makes it easier to share with masses.
As a part of their duty, parents, and teachers try to teach, whatever they know, to their children and students. However, parents and teachers can also learn from children and students if they keep their minds open. Questioning the old or popular concepts may open some new doors of knowledge for us. That is why healthy, genuine discussions are always good - as long as they are not for the sake of showing off or with the desire to win the arguments.
Sharing what we have - including the knowledge and experiences is what makes us human - different than animals.
Therefore, we must pass on our knowledge, wisdom, and experiences of life to others as much as possible.

Vo kisi aur ko binaa dhoonday, bina maangay hi mil jaata hai

If you want to be a Yogi

If you want to be a Yogi, you must be free and place your circumstances where you are alone and free from all anxiety.
He, who desires a comfortable and nice life, and at the same time wants to realize the Self is like the fool who, wanting to cross the river, caught hold of a crocodile, mistaking it for a log of wood.
“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and everything shall be added unto you.”

Live for an ideal, and leave no place in the mind for anything else.
If we have true yearning for realization, we must struggle, and through struggle, growth will come.

A Handful or the Whole Universe?

But if you want the whole universe, then you will have to become Kabeer.
Alexander, even after conquering so many countries, and after acquiring so much wealth, was still not satisfied.
He wanted more - his hands were still not full.

On the other hand, Kabeer ji was a personification of happiness and bliss.
Completely satisfied, there was nothing he needed or wanted more.
He had the whole universe - nothing was lacking for him.

What do we want?
A handful or the whole universe?
