Peace does not mean inactivity or silence nor it means to
stay away from the world and escape its conflicts.
Peace does not mean weakness or inability - those
who cannot stand up to the irritation caused by daily life, by the opposition
or the shock, whose nerves are weak - do not know the meaning of peace.
Peace does not mean laziness. We do not need to escape the world or it's disturbances in
order to cultivate peace.
Peace is the nature of Atman (Aatma - the Self), and can be
achieved while performing our daily duties and responsibilities, with the sense
of detachment and renunciation.
Detachment does not mean being indifferent and performing
every action without love or caring. It means not expecting anything in return.
It means performing the right actions regardless of their outcomes – favorable
or unfavorable - good or bad.
As Lord Krishna says in Bhagavad Geeta:
योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय
सिद्धसिद्धयोः समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते ||
(भगवद गीता 2 - 48)
Yogasthah kuru karmaani sangam tyaktvaa dhananjaya
Sidhasidhyoh samo bhutvaa samatvam yog uchyate
"Fixed in Yoga, do thy work, O Arjun, abandoning attachment.
With an even mind in success and failure - for evenness of mind is called yoga". (Bhagavad Geeta 2-48)
No original Hindu holy Scripture promotes the idea of leaving the world or abandoning the actions such as earning money and taking care of families. Rather, Bhagavad Geeta as well as the Upanishads emphasize on performing one's duties to the best of their abilities. Their teachings are to abandon the 'attachment' - not the action.
"Taina Tyaktaina Bhunjithah"
(Rigveda)
"Enjoy the world and the worldly life with the sense of 'detachment'.
And that is the philosophy of Guru Nanak as well. He says one can attain Moksha while living in his home - in the world - by keeping his mind detached.
हरि सेती मन रव रहिआ घर ही माहि उदास
"One can stay at home and mentally get detached from the world while his soul remains blended with God".
मन रे गृह ही माहि उदास
सचु संजम करणी सो करे गुरमुखि होय परगास
गुर कै सबदि मन जीतिया गति मुक्ति घरै महि पाय
"In the own house, O My soul, remain detached from the world.
He, who has been enlightened by Guru's teachings - practices righteousness and virtuous actions.
The one, who conquers his mind by Guru's instructions, obtains salvation and liberation while living in his own home".
So, as per the teachings of the Holy Scriptures, we do not need to escape the world or it's disturbances in order to achieve liberation or attain peace.
