A Beautiful Prayer about Growing Old

This morning, I received a Beautiful Prayer about Growing Old.

After reading and enjoying this prayer, I tried to search for the original author.

However, I found quite a few different versions of this prayer.

While its origin is obscure, some believe it represents a 17th-century nun - an unnamed Mother Superior.

Nonetheless, It's a beautiful prayer, and we can learn so much from it to make our lives more accepting and peaceful.

                                                 A PRAYER

“Lord, I know that I am growing older, and will someday be old.

Keep me from becoming talkative and possessive 

Free me from the idea that I must express myself on every subject 
and free me from the fatal habit of thinking that I must say something on every subject and on every occasion.
Release me from craving to try to straighten out everybody’s affairs.
Keep me from the recital of endless details - give me wings to get to the point.

Seal my lips when I am inclined to tell of my aches and pains.
They are increasing with the years, and my love to speak of them grows sweeter as the days go by.

Restrain me from telling what I have done for others, 

instead let me count my blessings in silence. 

Teach me the glorious lesson, that occasionally I may be wrong.

Make me thoughtful, but not moody and nosey - helpful but not bossy.
Keep me reasonably sweet.

Give me the ability to see the good things in unexpected places and talents in unexpected people. And, give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so.

With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all —
but Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end.”

BAPS Hindu Temple hosting Ramadan/Iftar in Abu Dhabi 

        वसुधैव कुटुंबकम 

सारी  धरती एक ही कुनबा अर्थात परिवार है 

All the Arab Ministers and Arab Sheikhs of UAE Abu Dhabi and Dubai came to Abu Dhabi temple today in the month of Ramadan and completed their fasting of Ramadan fast at the temple in Prasad land.

अपने भी अब कितने बेगाने से लगते हैं

बदले बदले चेहरे अनजाने से लगते हैं 

अपने भी अब कितने बेगाने से लगते हैं

वो ही मंज़र,दीवार-ओ-दर वो ही काशाने

ये रस्ते तो अपने पहचाने से लगते हैं  

रहती थी हर वक़्त जहां रौनक दीवाली सी 

अब वो महल चुबारे वीराने से लगते हैं 

खुल जाता है भेद शमा के जलते ही उनका 

शक़्ल-ओ-सूरत में जो परवाने से लगते हैं 

जाने कितने दुःख हैं उनके दिल में पोशीदा

दिखने में जो ग़म से अनजाने से लगते हैं 

प्रेम हुआ फिर शादी और फिर जीवन भर आनंद 

ये किस्से तो फ़िल्मी अफ़साने से लगते हैं 

सुनते थे बचपन में जिसकी लाठी उसकी भैंस

अब ये किस्से जाने पहचाने से लगते हैं   

जाने क्या देखा रिंदों ने साक़ी में 'राजन '

जिसको भी देखो वो दीवाने से लगते हैं

मंज़र             =  दृश्य, परिदृश्य  Scene, Scenario 

दीवार-ओ-दर  =  दीवारें और दरवाजे Walls and doors

काशाने          =  इमारतें, मकान, भवन, Buildings 

पोशीदा        =  छुपे हुए   Hodden

रिन्द    =  पीने वाले, पीने के शौक़ीन 

اپنے بھی اب کتنے بیگانے سے لگتے ہیں

بدلے بدلے چہرے انجانے سے لگتے ہیں 

اپنے بھی اب کتنے بیگانے سے لگتے ہیں 

وو ہی منظر دیوار و در وو ہی کاشانے 

یہ رستے تو اپنے پہچانے سے لگتے ہیں 

رہتی تھی ہر وقت جہاں رونق دیوالی سی 

اب وو محل چبارے ویرانے سے لگتے ہیں 

دل میں جانے کتنے دکھ چھپاہے بیٹھے ہیں 

چہرے سے جو غم سے انجانے سے لگتے ہیں 

 

کھل جاتا ہے بھید شمع کے جلتے ہی انکا 

شقل-و-صورت میں جو پروانے سے لگتے ہیں 

پیار کیا پھر شادی اور پھر جیوں بھر آنند 

یہ قصے تو فلمی افسانے سے لگتے ہیں 

سنتے تھے بچپن مے جس کی لاٹھی اسکی بھینس 

اب یہ قصے جانے پہچانے سے لگتے ہیں

جانے کیا دیکھا رندوں نے ساقی میں راجن 

جسکو بھی دیکھو وو دیوانے سے لگتے ہیں

Vo hee manzar, deevaar-o-dar, vo hee kashaanay

 Ye rastay to apnay pehchaanay say lagtay hain 

Rehti thi har vaqt jahaan  raunak deevaali see

Ab vo mehal chubaaray veeranay say lagtay hain 

Khul jaataa hai bhaid shamaa kay jaltay hee un ka 

Shaql-o-soorat mein jo parvaanay say lagtay hain 

Dil mein jaanay kitnay duhkh chhupaaye baithay hain 

Chehray say jo  gam say anjaanay say lagtay hain 

Prem huaa phir shaadi aur phir jeevan bhar aanand 

Ye kissay to filmi afsaanay say lagtay hain 

Suntay thay bachpan mein jis kee laathi us ki bhains

Manzar                = Scene, Scenery, Panorama, Decor 

Deevaar-o-Dar   = Walls and doors

Kashaanay          = Buildings, Dwellings 

Anjaanay             = Unknown, Unfamiliar, Unaware 

Rind                     = fond of drinking, Intoxicated

All familiar faces have changed now and seem so unfamiliar 

Our own people seem like strangers now 

Same decor, same walls and doors, and same dwellings 

This place, these streets look so familiar. 

It used to be as bright and lively as Diwali all the time.

But now it looks like an abandoned, deserted place.

The secret is revealed as soon as the candle is lit 

- about those that resemble moths in appearance

We never know how many sorrows are hidden in their hearts - 

Whose faces seem to be oblivious to sorrows.

First love, then marriage, and then lifelong happiness.

Such stories seem like stories from the movies only.

In childhood, we heard that he, who has the stick, owns the buffalo.

Now - we see such phenomena every day around us.

Don't know what they saw in the bartender (the leader) 

Everyone seems to be so intoxicated and engaged.

हर समस्या का समाधान होता है

लगता है कि हर व्यक्ति के पास हर समस्या का समाधान होता है - 

    लेकिन ऐसी समस्या -  जो अपनी नहीं - किसी और की हो 

औरों को समझाना - हर बात में सलाह मशविरा देना बहुत आसान होता है - 

"अजी क्या फ़र्क़ पड़ता है - ऐसी छोटी छोटी बातों से घबराया न करो - इन्हें दरगुज़र कर दिया करो - आशावादी रहो  - मस्त रहो - जीवन का आनंद लो " - इस तरह की बातें कह के हम अक़्सर औरों की समस्याओं को टालने का यत्न करते हैं - उन्हें समझाने की कोशिश करते हैं। 

 

लेकिन अगर वही बात - वही घटना हमारे साथ हो जाए तो हमारी सोच - हमारा व्यवहार बदल जाता है। 

जो लोग अक़सर दूसरों को दरगुज़र करने और आशावादी बने रहने की सलाह और प्रेरणा दिया करते हैं - अगर वही बात उनके साथ हो जाए तो फिर वही लोग ये कहते हुए पाए जाते हैं कि " ये तो ठीक नहीं है - ऐसा तो नहीं होना चाहिए -- ये तो सरासर बेइंसाफ़ी है" इत्यादि। 

होना तो ये चाहिए कि  - जो दूसरों को कहते हैं - वही बात - वही सोच अपने लिए भी होनी चाहिए।  

या तो हम भी वही करें जो दूसरों को करने के लिए कहते हैं - 

या फिर - जैसा अपने लिए चाहते हैं - ठीक वैसा ही दूसरों के लिए भी सोचना और माँगना चाहिए।   

हम अपना अपमान तो सहन नहीं कर सकते - 

अपने लिए तो हर किसी से आदर और सत्कार की अपेक्षा रखते हैं लेकिन किसी दूसरे का आदर सत्कार होते नहीं देख सकते - किसी और की प्रशंसा सहन नहीं कर सकते। और ईर्ष्यावश उसे रोकने का प्रयास करते हैं।  

हक़ीक़त तो ये है कि हर इन्सान को अपने जैसा समझना ही इन्सानियत है। 

इन्सानियत का अर्थ है - किसी से भी - किसी भी प्रकार का भेदभाव न रखते हुए हर इन्सान को ठीक अपने जैसा ही समझना और उन्हें यथोचित प्रेम और आदर देना।

Everyone has a solution to every problem

It seems - everyone has a solution to every problem

As long as it's someone else's problem - not theirs.

It is easy to give advice to others. 

Usually, people try to guide others and try to solve their problems by saying things like:   

"What difference does it make - don't worry about such small things - let them pass by - be optimistic - let's forget it - let's move on- be happy - enjoy life, etc.

But if the same thing or the same incident happens to them, their behavior changes.

People who often give advice and tell others to be accepting and optimistic - start thinking and behaving differently when something similar happens to them.

They are usually found saying, "This is not right - this should not happen this way - this is sheer injustice, etc.

Shouldn't we think and do the same as we tell others to do?

We should either do what we advise others to do - 

Or we should ask for the same for others what we want for ourselves. 

We don't want to endure insults - 

We expect respect and admiration from everyone. 

But at the same time, we cannot tolerate anyone else being praised, honored, and respected. 

We feel jealous and try to prevent it. 

The meaning of humanity is to consider every human being the same as one's own self - without any type of discrimination.
