Deepawali - The Festival of Light - Beyond Illuminating Homes, Illuminate Our Minds

Deepawali - The Festival of Lights
Beyond Illuminating Homes, Let Us Illuminate Our Minds

Deepawali, commonly known as Diwali, is one of India's most significant cultural festivals.
Interestingly, almost all major religions in India associate this day with a unique event from their own histories.
However, the celebration of light is not confined to India.
Different cultures around the world celebrate festivals involving lights and candles, such as Christmas, Hanukkah, St. Lucia's Day, and Loi Krathong in Thailand.

Since ancient times, humanity has been fascinated by the sun's light and power, recognizing it as the source and sustainer of life.
Therefore, Light and fire have held a special place in every ancient civilization and religious tradition.

However, Light has another, deeper significance.
        It symbolizes Gyana - Knowledge.
Just as we need physical light to see clearly and find our way in the darkness, we need the light of Gyana or knowledge to understand life, distinguish right from wrong, and find the path of truth.
The Vedas express this aspiration beautifully:
Tamaso Maa Jyotirgamaya'
'Lead me from darkness to light.'
Mahatma Buddha said: Atma Deepo Bhava - Be your own light.

These are not merely words to be recited.
They represent the transformation we should aspire to bring into our lives.

Others may guide us; in fact, we do need guidance from others - such as teachers, Gurus, and wise and experienced people - but ultimately, we must develop our own understanding and wisdom rather than blindly depending upon someone else's beliefs or opinions.
Lamps may be different, But the light is the same.

The darkness outside eventually disappears with the rising sun.
But the darkness within our minds does not disappear on its own. It requires knowledge, understanding, introspection, and sincere effort.

The Deeper Meaning of Diwali - Cleaning the Mind

Diwali is also traditionally a time to clean homes, discard old and unwanted belongings, and bring in new things.
Perhaps we should apply the same idea to our minds.
Just as we can not properly clean a room in complete darkness. We need light to identify what is unwanted and put things in their proper places.
Similarly, we need the light of Gyana to examine our minds - to discard outdated beliefs, prejudices, misconceptions, and useless dogmas, and make room for new and beneficial ideas.

Therefore, on this Deepawali, let us not merely illuminate our homes and surroundings. Let us also illuminate our minds with the light of Gyana.
Let us not merely discard old clothes and belongings, but also discard outdated and useless thoughts.
Let us move beyond the Naam & Roopa - the limitations of names and forms and recognize the Formless, Limitless, and Timeless reality.
May this Deepawali bring happiness, health, prosperity, wisdom, and understanding into everyone's life. May love, kindness, and the spirit of oneness prevail everywhere.

Tamaso Maa Jyotirgamaya – Lead me from darkness to light.
Asato Maa Sadgamaya – Lead me from falsehood to truth.
Mrityor Maa Amritam Gamaya – Lead me from mortality to immortality, from bondage to freedom.
Happy and Auspicious Deepawali to all!
May Almighty Nirankar bless us all.
