Sumati Kumati sabkay ur maahin (Noble and evil thoughts dwell in everyone's heart)

Sumati Kumati sab kay ur rehahin
Naath Puran Nigam us kahahin॥
Jahaan Sumati tahaan Sampati naana
Jahan Kumati tahaan bipati nidaana॥
                      " Ram Charit Maanas"

Meaning:
O Lord! The Puranas and Vedas state that both 'Subuddhi' (wisdom, noble thoughts, and goodwill) and 'Kubuddhi' (foolishness, malice, hatred, and evil thoughts) reside in everyone's heart.
Generally, every person's mind constantly gives rise to a mix of goodwill and ill-will—good thoughts and bad thoughts. The difference lies merely in degree. Some people's minds are predominantly filled with goodwill and noble thoughts, whereas others harbor constant malice towards others.
Saint Tulsidas says that where 'Subuddhi' prevails, various forms of wealth, happiness, prosperity, and peace reside.
And where 'Kubuddhi' prevails, various calamities and sorrows dwell.
It implies that changing one's thoughts can transform one's life.
If the mind continually harbors noble thoughts and goodwill towards all, and stays free from envy and hatred, it will remain calm, and happiness and peace will endure in life.

    जहाँ सुमति तहँ संपति नाना। जहाँ कुमति तहँ बिपति निदाना॥

  2. Well said but transformation towards noble thoughts at times becomes difficult .needs practice . Mind always tends towards negativity and requires monitoring to bring it back towards positivity

  5. Optism (Positivity) and Pessimism (Negativity) both constitute sum total of human mind. Think both contribute. Like Invention of Aerplane is of former, while for parachute, credit goes to latter. But for leading contented lifespan, optism stands in good stead.

  7. Thank you ji for sharing this beautiful verse.
Depending on circumstances, we show either goodwill towards some people, or ill-will towards others.
Is it possible to rise above the circumstances, and show tolerance and goodwill even towards those who are not good to us?
When we are aware that others too have the same divine spark in them as it is within us, we may be more inclined to tolerate and accept the situation. Our peace of mind is preserved. Life becomes free of strife and more worthy of living.

  8. We as a human being will always have these both thoughts. Just like day and night. But having a little candle in and around us, the night will be less dark. I think everyone has a candle but it is not lit yet. Thanks for sharing and being a spark to light it.
